Great Floridian Challenge: Half Iron and Full Iron

Several Vandy tri members packed in a van of 10 for their first half iron and full ironman experience. We were all optimistic that we would rock the bike course because we train in Tennessee, but this race took place in the most topographic part of Florida.

Old Hickory Sprint Triathlon
400y swim, 1.5mi run, 12mi bike, 1.5mi run
Today saw members of the Vanderbilt Tri club up in Hendersonville for the Old Hickory Lake Triathlon. This triathlon is an unorthodox triathlon in that the run is broken up into two parts surrounding bike, but it is personally one of my favorite triathlons around. The club had a huge showing last year by placing in almost every category we had members in. Almost a completely new set of members competed for us this year and here are their results:
Coach Stephen Taylor: 58:52 (3rd Overall Male)
Alexandra Thompson: 1:17:16 (3rd Beginner Female, also good enough for age group winner)
Mindy Craven: 1:14:35 (1st Age Group)
Susan Howell: 1:23:37 (Congrats on a great time even with mechanical problems)
Maria Mendiburo: 1:25:39 (3 minutes faster than last year)
Csaba Toth: 1:11:16 (3rd Age Group)
Sarah Nation: 1:13:59 (1st Age Group)
Terry Maroney: 1:33:03 (Beat last years time!)
Andrea Roldan:1:31:42 (3rd Age Group)
Congrats to everyone for an amazing showing at the race. Let's build on these results and blow everyone away next weekend.

Mountain Lakes Triathlon [SEC Race]
Today saw the opening of the 2008-2009 SECTC season. The Mountain Lakes Triathlon
is over twenty years old and routinely has more than 700 participants, making it an extremely large sprint triathlon. The course is extremely fast, as it is flat and shaded. The race began in a seagrass(?) filled lake, making it extremely tough to swim the first and last part of the course.

Brett Robinson Alabama Coastal Triathlon
This weekend saw a crazy travel down to Gulf Shores/Orange Beach for the 2nd Alabama Coastal triathlon. The event became a duathlon after the lifeguards were unable to make it past the breakers. The swim was canceled and a 1 mile run was placed in. Despite this change and the strong winds, we racked up some amazing results. The ladies were stellar and really swept the awards. Also, Steve beat a pro to come in 2nd. Congrats to all. Here are the results:

Rebel Man Sprint Triathlon
This was our first 2008 race. What we learned: make sure you know if the race is draft legal; many competitors did not know this and bitched up a storm about it. Make sure you know the race and the rules. Now on to the results:

?/200: Andrew Hutchinson 1:15
Men:
Walter Jermakowicz 1:16

Hammer Duathlon
Everyone had personal best with Laura running a full 1 and 2 mins faster this year and a bike that was 3 min faster. Susan completed her first Duathlon, which I consider to be more difficult than tris, with great
finish. Craig took a full 1 min and 1:30 min off my min per mile pace and biked over 1 MPH faster than last year. Steve looked even better this year and cut his time down behind the winner of the race. Congrats to everyone and let's take this momentum to Nationals.
Laura Ballenger: 1:45:30 (1st Age Group)
Craig Garmindia: 1:31:27 (1st Age Group)
Susan Meredith Howell: 1:42:51 (2nd Age Group)
Stephen Taylor: 1:14:35 (2nd Overall)
